What did they make in the Ludlow Mills?
Who bought some of their products?
In our group we researched what the Ludlow Manufacturing Associates made during their most successful years. All of their items were made from jute, which had come from India. They made four main products throughout the 1920’s. These products were: Jute Yarn, Fine and Coarse Twine, Cotton Bagging and Jute Webbing. You can see these products in the picture to the right.
During their most productive years, over four thousand employees worked in the mills. Their first product was Jute Yarn, which was used for a backing for woven rugs. Twine was another product that they made. The United States Post Office was the main buyer of twine. Cotton bagging was the third product for the Ludlow Manufacturing Associates. This was manufactured and used to carry cotton. The fourth product was Jute Webbing. Jute Webbing was a narrow woven strip of material and was used a lot in furniture and seats in cars. During the 1920’s, which were their most successful years, they made these four main products. The Depression of the 1930’s led to the decline of the L.M.A. In the following decades, production dropped and that was the beginning of the end of the Ludlow Mills.
In this undated picture, you can see that the Ludlow Manufacturing Associates displayed their goods at some sort of exhibit. Look at how they used their products to make their booth. These pictures tell us what the L.M.A. made and that they were a successful business in Ludlow.
