Where was Ludlow’s first town meeting held?
What was discussed there?
Our research project is on Ludlow’s first town meeting. The first town meeting was on March 29, 1774. At that time, Stony Hill in Springfield had become Ludlow, Massachusetts. The meeting was about making decisions for their new town. The meeting took place at Abner Hitchcock’s house, which was on what we know today as Fuller Street. Moses Bliss was voted moderator of the meeting. Some of the jobs he handed out were “deer reaves” and “hog reaves.” Those people cut down the amount of deer and hogs and that were being hunted at certain times of the year. Joseph Miller was awarded the selectman job in the year of 1774. We tried to read the original record of the meeting that was in the in the handwriting of Benjah Willey. It is in old time cursive and it is only possible to read a couple of words.
