Typical Ludlow Farms

What did people have on their farms?
How many farms were in operation in early Ludlow?
On our project we worked on typical Ludlow farms. There were 83 farm lands in operation in 1801. The average farmer used no more than a tenth of his acres to raise crops and fodder. Another tenth of his land was woods, roads, or it was covered with water. The rest of the land was just not used. Most farmers owned one horse and usually two oxen. They also had cows, hogs, chicken, and sheep. They grew mostly corn and rye, but also some oats, wheat, peas, and beans. Farm life was very hard in Ludlow.
