Why did they sell wool?

Woolen mills

"Jacob Eaton's House, Woolen Mill and Sawmill"

A History of Ludlow, 1974

Farming in Ludlow changed in the early 1800’s.  The people were becoming less self-sufficient and wanted money to buy things for their family.  Their needs were changing.  They needed money to buy tools and other household items that they couldn’t make themselves.  They needed money to buy sugar and codfish.  They began to raise sheep on their farms, not just grain and vegetables.  They could sell wool from the sheep and get the money they needed. Wool mills were being built around the Chicopee River in Ludlow.  The mills were water-powered and Ludlow began to change.
